Since November 2022, Cafeteria Workers at Lawrence Public Schools, who are members of SEIU Local 3, have demanded that the School District extend a stipend which Lunch Aides at the smaller City of Lawrence Public Schools negotiated to the Cafeteria Workers who work at the larger City of Lawrence Public Schools. Finally, on June 23 2023, the Lawrence Cafeteria Workers will receive their hard fought for stipend!
This campaign began when SEIU Local 3 members learned that the Lunch Aids had successfully negotiated a stipend for maintaining their ServSafe certification. Given that the Cafeteria Workers and the Lunch Aids must maintain the ServSafe certification and do essentially the same work, SEIU Local 3 members felt that they ought to receive the same stipend. However, while the Lunch Aids were in open negotiations, the Cafeteria Workers were not.
In December 2022, SEIU Local 3 circulated a petition requesting that the School District extend the stipend to the Lawrence Cafeteria Workers. SEIU Local 3 submitted this petition to the School District. However, the School District refused to extend the stipend.
In February 2023, SEIU Local 3 went public with their fight for a ServSafe Stipend for the Cafeteria Workers. Assistant Business Agent DaCruz published an op-ed in the Catholic Labor Network and a "Letter to the Editor" in the Eagle-Tribune. On February 24, 2023, SEIU Local 3 members hand delivered the petition to the School District. In addition, the Cafeteria Workers' fight also received coverage in Rumbo.
On March 10, 2023, SEIU Local 3 held a press conference which was subsequently provided to community allies as well as the Lawrence Alliance for Education. Those community allies included the MassAFL-CIO who wrote a letter in support of the Cafeteria Workers' fight for a ServSafe Stipend.
On May 30, 2023, the School District agreed to pay the Lawrence Cafeteria Workers a one-time stipend of $5,500 for maintaining their ServSafe certification for School Year 2022-2023. While this is not the recurring stipend that SEIU Local 3 fought for, it is meaningful concession that the Cafeteria Workers secured after a months-long fight! This fight demonstrates the efficacy of direct action to secure wins for union workers.
Desde Noviembre de 2022, los trabajadores de cafetería en las escuelas públicas de Lawrence, miembros de SEIU Local 3, han exigido que el Distrito Escolar extienda un estipendio que los ayudantes de almuerzo en las escuelas públicas más pequeñas de la ciudad de Lawrence negociaron a los trabajadores de cafetería que trabajan en las escuelas públicas más grandes de la ciudad de Lawrence. Hoy los trabajadores de la cafetería de Lawrence recibirán el estipendio por el que tanto han luchado.
Esta campaña comenzó cuando los miembros de SEIU Local 3 se enteraron de que los ayudantes de almuerzo habían negociado con éxito un estipendio para mantener su certificación ServSafe. Dado que los trabajadores de la cafetería y los ayudantes de almuerzo deben mantener la certificación ServSafe y hacer esencialmente el mismo trabajo, los miembros de SEIU Local 3 consideraron que debían recibir el mismo estipendio. Sin embargo, mientras que los ayudantes de almuerzo estaban en negociaciones abiertas, los trabajadores de cafetería no lo estaban.
En Diciembre de 2022, SEIU Local 3 hizo circular una petición solicitando que el Distrito Escolar extendiera el estipendio a los trabajadores de la cafetería de Lawrence. SEIU Local 3 presentó esta petición al Distrito Escolar. Sin embargo, el Distrito Escolar se negó a extender el estipendio.
En Febrero de 2023, SEIU Local 3 hizo pública su lucha por un estipendio ServSafe para los trabajadores de la cafetería. El Agente Asistente de Negocios DaCruz publicó un artículo de opinión en el Catholic Labor Network y una "Carta al Editor" en el Eagle-Tribune. El 24 de Febrero de 2023, los miembros de SEIU Local 3 entregaron en mano la petición al Distrito Escolar. Además, la lucha de los Trabajadores de Cafetería también recibió cobertura en Rumbo.
El 10 de Marzo de 2023, SEIU Local 3 realizo una conferencia de prensa que posteriormente se proporcionó a los aliados de la comunidad, así como a la Alianza de Lawrence para la Educación. Esos aliados de la comunidad incluyeron el Mass AFL-CIO que escribió una carta en apoyo de la lucha de los trabajadores de cafetería por un estipendio ServSafe.
El 30 de Mayo de 2023, el Distrito Escolar acordó pagar a los trabajadores de la cafetería de Lawrence un estipendio único de $ 5,500 por mantener su certificación ServSafe para el año escolar 2022-2023. ¡Si bien este no es el estipendio recurrente por el que SEIU Local 3 luchó, es una concesión significativa que los trabajadores de la cafetería obtuvieron después de una lucha de meses! Esta lucha demuestra la eficacia de la acción directa para asegurar victorias para los trabajadores en Union.
